The August Vegan Box, features a new start-up brand of raspberry flavoured sweets by London-based company FitChews. Founded by Richard Raad, FitChews have created an incredible range of sweet chews made with natural ingredients and flavours. We caught up with Richard to find out what their inspiration was for launching the brand and to hear more about their exciting future plans for their innovative company!

THE INTERVIew

Hi Richard, nice to meet you. Can you first start by telling us who the products are primarily designed for?

Sure, firstly, we wanted to change a perception:

Sweetness, we all crave that tantalising taste, and whilst there is nothing wrong with having a sweet tooth, why should eating sweets fill us up with regret, guilt and refined   sugar?  We didn’t like the taste or feeling of that either, and being health conscious does not mean you should not treat yourself.  

Luckily, Fit Chews provides a healthier alternative for the health conscious, which allows you to treat yourself more often, giving you great tasting sweets, more pleasure, and no guilt.

If you could possibly pick, do you have a favourite product/mix from your range?

Cruel question that! I imagine this is how mothers feel, when asked which is their favourite child? 
In truth, I actually do not have a favourite, because I intend to only make flavours which I like. 
Having said that, I will pick Raspberry, as that is my favourite packaging colourway. 
 
What are your plans for FitChews for the next year?

We are a very small start-up with big ambitions,  our year goal will be to establish ourselves as a go to confectionary brand for the health conscious whilst building our client base so more health conscious individuals can share & enjoy Fit Chews.


What Sets Fitchews apart?

Our friends over at Tribe create energy and recovery snacks that help you to train stronger. Using only the highest quality natural ingredients free from sugars and artificial preservatives, Tribe’s snacks are so good that we had to include them in our own boxes! Founded by three friends passionate about running, we caught up co-founder Rob to find out what their inspiration was for launching the brand and to hear more about exciting future plans for the innovative company.

Tell us more about Tribe!
Tribe is a new health and fitness brand. We make health snacks for runners and other active people which we sell via subscription box (the Tribe Pack) and have a London-based run club (Run Tribe). Each Tribe Pack contains five nutrient-rich snacks to support runners in training, a weekly mini journal with recipe ideas and training tips, and an invitation to all Tribe’s weekly running events, nutrition sessions and adventure talks.

How did it get started and what was the inspiration for launching the brand?
The three of us who set up Tribe – myself, Tom, and Guy – are old friends who love running. We set Tribe up following a 1000 mile run we did together across Eastern Europe in 2013. We made our own trail mixes to keep us going on the road and found we could get all the sustenance and nutrients we needed from unrefined, natural foods; these tasted better, were better for our bodies, and better for the mountain trails we loved running through. That journey inspired Tribe: we decided to make natural foods to prepare other runners for tough journeys.

Who are Tribe products designed for?
Our snacks are designed for all active people, from those who go to the gym, yogis, and cyclists to anyone training for an ultra marathon. They are designed to give the nutrients active people need for energy (before exercise) and recovery (after exercise). The Tribe Pack is a weekly, fortnightly or monthly of these snacks.

What has the response been like since your launch and have their been any unexpected surprises?
We’ve had a great reaction to the brand since we launched in July. There’s loads of positive energy and our London running community – Run Tribe is growing every week. Our weekly runs are a massive part of Tribe and we love getting our community of runners together twice a week. Our Tribe Packs are also rapidly growing with three new energy bars launched last month and a range of recovery bars in development.

What sets Tribe’s snacks apart from other health and fitness snack products on the market?
The basis idea is that active people can get the energy and nutrients they need from unrefined wholefoods, and natural foods are a better source of these than refined ones. Much of the sports nutrition market is filled with heavily refined and sugary snacks and drinks, which we always disliked.

All Tribe foods are free from sulphites, refined sugars and juice concentrates. We work hard to source the best ingredients and use a mix of nutritionally powerful natural foods to deliver what active people need.

Our Packs are also a not just snacks but come with weekly training tips, advice and recipes making it a complete box of nutrition together with a weekly wellness guide.

What does a typical day look like at Tribe HQ?
Everyday is different! From packing boxes, mapping runs, meeting other great health and fitness brands, developing new products to the infamous weekly Friday Tribe Picnic, it’s very busy but all great fun.

What are your plans for Tribe in for the next year?
We’ve got loads in the pipeline. There are new products (we’re working on our recovery bars at the moment), we’ve just introduced personalised Tribe Packs, and are soon to introduce bespoke training plans. Get involved!

The October Barrecore Box, features the rather delicious ‘Maca Munchies’ by London-based company Raw Gorilla. Founded by Fraser and Agnes, Raw Gorilla have created an incredible range of sprouted snacks and breakfast products made with organic superfoods. We caught up with Fraser and Agnes to find out what their inspiration was for launching the brand and to hear more about their exciting future plans for their innovative company!

Tell us more about Raw Gorilla and your brand-new range of delicious grain-free cereals and snacks!
In the Raw Gorilla range you will find delicious activated paleo superfood breakfasts (called Raw Gorilla Crispies) These are made using organic sprouted buckwheat seeds, raw nuts, coconut chips and superfoods in a yummy raw vegan “creamy” sauce. We also have two paleo snacks, Raw Gorilla Munchies, raw, sprouted on the go superfood seed & nut cookies, which perk you up any time! No added sugar or salt, just fruits, nuts & seeds. Pretty darn delicious!

How did it get started and what was the inspiration for launching the brand? 
It all started at Fraser’s kitchen in Hackney (RG Founder). He really liked Coco Pops and Rice Crispies as a kid, but noticed that the sugar spike and dairy combo left him feeling wired and uncomfortable. Fraser wanted to create a breakfast which was healthy, delicious and energising, and yet which had the chocolately crispiness of Coco Pops/ even making the milk turn chocolately, and he did it. Buckwheat is so light, crispy and fluffy if you sprout it! So the crispies were born in his kitchen ☺ We are both crazy about whole foods, coconuts, seeds and nuts. We wanted to incorporate as many of them in our products as possible. Nothing processed here, just the good stuff.

Who are Raw Gorilla products designed for? 
Raw Gorilla products are available for everybody. All our products are plant based, free from gluten, wheat, grain and dairy. Whether you are following a plant based lifestyle or eat like a cave man, our Munchies and Crispies will make it onto your shopping list. Kids love them too!

What has the response been like since your launch?
The response has been overwhelming. We did not except such a wonderful response. We had a lot of support from Wholefoods Market and Planet organic as well as on top UK health sites such as Content Beauty, Hip & healthy, The Health Blogger Community & most recently Deliciously Ella. Of course let us not forget you guys at Primal Snack box, the first box to snap us up! You guys rock!

Unexpected surprises? Fair to say we had MANY unexpected surprises during our launch and it is to be expected. It has been a learning curve and we have learnt a great deal. We still do every single day. One nice surprise was that we sold out in the first 2 weeks!

What sets Raw Gorilla’s products apart from others on the market right now? 
There is nothing similar on the market right now. We were the first brand to launch a range that ticked all the boxes: Truly Raw dehydrated below 42*C, very low in natural sweetness, low calorie, source of protein, vegan, Paleo, Sprouted, Gluten Free breakfast and snacks range. Our Crispies are still unique and unmatched in Europe and possibly the world, certainly in taste. We wanted to bring sprouted buckwheat to the forefront as a great grain alternative. We also love activated nuts and seeds. These nuggets are bursting with nutrition and they are incredibly good for you. We also spent a lot of time on design. We wanted to create a fresh funky looking brand, which was fun and yet healthy, naughty but good for you. We wanted Raw Gorilla boxes to jump out at you! Finally we also wanted self-folding boxes, so no glue required during our packaging process and our packaging is fully recyclable which is important.

If you could possibly pick, do you have a favourite product from your range?
This is a good question. Fraser is going for the Raw Cacao Crispies and I love the Maca & Cinnamon Munchies, can’t stop eating them and he is always telling me off!

What’s your favourite way to eat your Crispies?
Fraser opts for cold almond milk and chopped banana and I like to nibble on them or sprinkle on top of coconut yoghurt.

They are available in Selfridges, Partridges, all Planet Organic Stores, As Nature Intended and many more independent health food stores. Also we are happy to announce that from January 2016 they will available in Wholefoods Market as well. Our website has a cool stockists and online shop section with all the stores listed.

What does a typical day look like at Raw Gorilla HQ?
We are based in Hackney, we both love the area, live locally and cycle to work. We usually start with a green juice and a catch up on a human level. Then it’s work mode.. we set up for the day with endless to do lists. We talk with our manufacturers almost every day, call our partners both in the UK and oversees. ( we export to 9 countries worldwide ) Then I check what’s going on our social media sites and check on our collaborations and events with bloggers and stores. We just welcomed two interns in our team which I’m super excited about. We manage to sneak in some taste testing and new product development which is always nice. Fraser cracks on with sales mainly and managing that process. We both get together and work on new products which is always exciting.

What are your plans for Raw Gorilla in for the next year?
We have some exciting new top secret developments in the pipeline… (hush, hush) We are both foodies hence we love to create delicious & innovative foods.

In September’s boxes, we included delicious Raspberry White Chocolate Macaroons by Surrey-based company Nourish

We caught up with founder Nourish Ineke to find out what their inspiration was for launching the brand and to hear more about their exciting future plans for the company!

Tell us more about Nourish and your range of delicious macaroons!
Hello and welcome to Nourish. We loved featuring in the Primal Snack Box in September. Our food blog and range of coconut macaroons has evolved out of a passion for food that nourishes us from the inside out. Coconut Macaroons is our signature product and is available in five varieties – Cacao, Red Velvet, Raspberry/White Chocolate, Strawberry/Honey and Passionfruit. How did it get started and what was the inspiration for launching the brand?
I have been encouraged by numerous friends to share my recipes and from this encouragement I started to write recipes and share them with those around me. My love of food started when I was very young, cooking dinners by the age of eight, I loved being in the kitchen and helping create food. I was brought up in a family where meals were made from scratch, something that in today’s world is now not the norm. I am incredibly thankful for that start, and am passionate about more families doing this as our children now grow up in a day and age where packet food is the norm. I became gluten free later in life and found that being gluten free was not making me healthier, my diet had become imbalanced, was missing good fats and contained far too much refined sugar. Having a background as a senior practice nurse I saw the effects of refined carbohydrate diets in patients and wanted to find out more about the food we eat. From this I explored different options of having treats and wholefood that not only was good for you, but tastes fabulous!

Who are Nourish products designed for? (Who do they appeal to?)
They are designed for everyone, but particularly appeal to those that still like to have a healthy treat, but know that it is not going to be full of refined products. People who try the products are often amazed that you can have food that is not only good for you but tastes great.

What has the response been like since your launch and have their been any unexpected surprises?
Excellent. We are stocked in a couple of stores and have had wonderful feedback. The unexpected surprise, is learning how to develop an idea into educating people about their health and well-being in regards to food, and how to get that message out there.

What sets Nourish’s products apart from other snacks on the market?
Most gluten-free and dairy free snacks on the market have refined sugars or/and preservatives and additives, they are far from nourishing. Our macaroons are made from wholefoods and are refined sugar free as well as being individually handmade! Coconut Oil is one of the main ingredients used and has been shown in research to be highly beneficial to our health and well-being due to the presence of lauric acid. Cacao used in two of our macaroons in its raw state is also beneficial with over 300 nutritional compounds and found to be one of the highest sources of antioxidants on the earth….

If you could possibly pick, do you have a favourite flavour from your range?
My favourite flavour is the Cacao and the Strawberry/Honey macaroons.

We are currently stocked in the following two stores: Inside out Health, Reigate and hiSbe, Brighton.
We are looking to expand into other health food stores. You can order direct by e-mail, and we hoping to do it via the website in the next couple of months. Christmas Hamper boxes will be available from beginning of November.

What does a typical day look like at Nourish HQ?
Nourish business days usually vary between a long day of making the macaroons, and packaging them and days of business development; we are part of Entrepreneurial Spark at the moment, which has been an incredible opportunity to look at how to grow your business. On days off, I either spend time with my wonderful husband and 4 yr old daughter or work as a nurse while they are at work/school.

What are your plans for Nourish in for the next year?
We would love to see our products in more health food stores across the country as well as feature in snack boxes. We plan to work on the blog and create more delicious recipies that will nourish you from the inside out. Welcome to our favourite blog feature: ‘Supplier Spotlight’ where we’ll be interviewing the creative and hardworking individuals that create the delicious snacks that find their way into our boxes. In September’s boxes, we are delighted to be featuring a range of grain-free crackers by Gloucestershire-based company Primal Bakers

Founders of Primal Bakers, Rosa and Izzy, produce a range of grain-free baked goods, free from wheat, dairy and refined sugars. Their growing range of paleo products includes paleo bread loaves, savoury crackers and deliciously tempting cookies and cakes, too! We caught up with co-founder Izzy to find out what their inspiration was for launching the brand and to hear more about their exciting future plans for the company!

Tell us more about Primal Bakers and your range of paleo friendly baked goods!
It is two of us at Primal Bakers, Rosa and Izzy. Rosa has a family tradition of turron making (an almond based Spanish Christmas bar) where she learnt her great skills as a baker and a fine taste for good quality sweet products. Izzy is a Personal Trainer and Nutrition Advisor and has always taking very close attention to what goes into her mouth and of her family’s. We both ended up for different reasons following a Paleo/Primal diet and have reaped the benefits!

We have 14 products at the moment although we keep researching and trying new ideas. We have biscuits, cakes, breads and crackers.

How did it get started and what was the inspiration for launching the brand?
We both love to bake and have always done so at home. Following a Paleo/Primal diet took us to learn new ways of baking and we wanted to prove our friends that it is possible to create tasty baked goods with natural ingredients. They couldn’t believe it when they tried them! We got people round for coffee a few times and they encouraged us to sell them. One thing lead to the next and here we are today!

Who are Primal Bakers products designed for? 
We have a wide spectrum of people that have found in our products the solution for something they were missing. When it comes to people with gluten and dairy intolerances, they have finally found flavour and lovely texture that other products lack according to them. When it comes to Paleo/Primal followers, they have found they can still enjoy a nice treat that is according to their eating plans. When it comes to parents, they have found that they can improve their kid’s diet and of their own without feeling deprived.

What has the response been like since your launch and have their been any unexpected surprises?
We have been going from strength to strength to the point that sometimes it is hard to believe that those coffee mornings just not even a year ago has taken us to this! It is very exciting and scary at the same time but we are full of enthusiasm and have had a lot of fun along the way.

As a surprise we certainly thought there would be more interest from the fitness world. We believe natural ingredients, high protein and good fats would be of good use for regular exercises and possibly better than processed bars and shakes, but that is of course our opinion. They might change their mind in the future if they try them!

What sets Primal Bakers apart from other gluten free producers on the market?
We use almonds as the base all our products. Almonds are naturally gluten free and bring a whole range of nutrition benefits with them. They are naturally sweet which means only very small amounts of honey or maple syrup need to be added what overall brings a better nutrition profile to the bakes. Most gluten free products use highly processed flours that are bland and tasteless which means a lot of sugar and additives need to be added to make them palatable. Gluten free products are on the high but we thing gluten free doesn’t necessarily mean healthy. Watch out for the list of ingredients!

If you could possibly pick, do you have a favourite product from you range?
Rosa and I have different tastes so I need to say two at least or it wouldn’t be fair. Rosa’s favourite is apple cake as a treat and the rosemary and chia crackers for a snack on the go. I love the banana bread for breakfast (tasty and ready to eat!) and the seeds crackers to go with my salads. I think I haven’t answered your question accurately enough but it is so difficult!

Thank you! The best thing would be to go to our website www.primalbakers.co.uk. We have a few shops around our area that stock our products and some other websites will be offering them very soon too.

We hear that you’ll be exhibiting a stall at London’s paleo conference Health Unplugged this year. You must be hugely excited! What can attendees expect you to bring along?
Yes we are very excited to attend this conference both to get people to know our products but also to listen to the speakers that will attend. It will be a great opportunity to meet other paleo fellas as well as for them to try our bakes. We will be bringing our full range of cakes, breads, crackers and biscuits to sell and for people to try so they can decide which of they like the best!

What does a typical day look like at Primal Bakers HQ?
Our days don’t look very similar to one to another to be honest. We normally start baking very early in the morning so by midday bakes are cooling down and we can do some admin work (calls, emails, research, etc.). We then do some packing usually or domestic duties (school run, dog walk, amongst others). In the evening is usually more baking or packing. Because we do everything ourselves we have to divide our time between baking and running the company which makes it more fun!

What are your plans for Primal Bakers in for the next year?
We would like our on line shop to consolidate and attract a lot of paleo and non-paleo customers. We have a few big events booked already as well. This has been our first year so we have been trying different things and now that we know what we like and are good at we want to concentrate all our energies into it. We would like to be recognised all around the UK, as the leading paleo bakery is that too much to aim for? 😉

SUPPLIER SPOTLIGHT: RAW HALO

Welcome to our favourite blog feature: ‘Supplier Spotlight’ where we’ll be interviewing the inspirational and hard-working individuals that create the delicious snacks that find their way into our boxes. In August’s boxes we are thrilled to be featuring London-based raw chocolatiers: Raw Halo.

Founded by Meg Haggar, Raw Halo launched their range of artisan raw chocolates only earlier this year. Inspired by a clean-eating philosophy, Raw Halo’s chocolate use the finest organic Peruvian cacao combined with nourishing superfoods to create a chocolate treat that’s a powerhouse of nutrition. Raw Halo’s chocolate bars are hand-crafted in small batches with a current collection of nine exquisite flavours, two of which (‘Sour Cherry & Almond‘ and ‘Dark & Sweet Orange‘) feature in our August boxes! We caught with founder Meg to find out more about her inspiration to start Raw Halo and her future plans for what promises to be a very exciting year.

Tell us more about Raw Halo and what sets you apart from other chocolate products on the market.
Raw Halo is an award winning, artisan raw chocolate brand. We are organic, vegan approved and refined sugar free, but unlike mass produced products, Raw Halo chocolate is handmade and hand wrapped. We source the finest Peruvian cacao; it has such rich and indulgent flavour which means we only need to add a touch of raw coconut sugar to naturally sweeten it. Our dairy-free ‘mylk’ chocolate recipe has only half the amount of total sugars compared to many other leading raw chocolate brands – which we think is really important. I find that chocolate preferences are so personal so I’ve created 9 different bars meaning there’s something for everyone whether you like your chocolate dark, creamy, pure, with added crunch, flavoured or fruity.

How did it get started and what was the inspiration for launching the brand?
I’ve always had a real passion for all things chocolate but I took the decision to cut out refined sugar from my diet nearly three years ago, which back then meant no more chocolate. It was actually my Mum who then introduced me to raw chocolate. Having not tasted anything remotely sweet for about 6 months, you can imagine my excitement – I loved it! From there, I started making my own chocolates using raw cacao combined with my favourite superfoods. I knew that I could bring variety to the market and offer something which tasted delicious that was refined sugar free. The idea continued to evolve, experimenting with different flavours and perfecting my craft until Raw Halo was launched earlier this year.

Who are Raw Halo products designed for?
A large proportion of my customers are health conscious (often vegan / paleo / gluten-free) who want to treat themselves to something indulgent without feeling guilty. However, particularly at events, I’m seeing a growing interest from those who perhaps haven’t heard of or tried raw chocolate before. The response has always been highly positive once they discover how good it tastes and how much healthier it is compared to traditional chocolate.

What has the response been like since your launch and have there been any unexpected surprises?
It’s been overwhelmingly positive. Leaving a successful career in corporate HR, there was always going to be that apprehension. Seeing my growing online sales, new stockists coming on board, and receiving such lovely feedback from customers at events has removed any doubt I had. For what I’d thought would initially be a mostly London centric customer base, I’ve been surprised  to receive orders from so many international customers. That’s such a rewarding feeling to know that news of a brand and product I’ve created has spread so far in such a short space of time.

What are the benefits of raw chocolate compared to conventional chocolate?
Raw chocolate is different to traditional chocolate in that it’s not roasted. Instead, the temperature is kept below 42 degrees to ensure the vital nutrients found in raw cacao, such as magnesium, iron and antioxidants, are retained. Most raw chocolate brands complement this by keeping their bars refined sugar free, gluten-free and dairy-free.

Fantastically, the only sweeteners you use are coconut sugar and lucuma – how important was it for you to ensure your chocolates were refined sugar-free?
For me this is super important. It also means I can enjoy my range of bars whilst sticking to a refined sugar free diet. I’ve done a lot of research about diets which are high in refined sugar and the findings are rather scary. I’d say that coconut sugar and lucuma are my preferred sweeteners as so many people, myself included, are sensitive to high fructose sweeteners like agave.

Uniquely, your ‘Mylk & Salted Caramel’ bar contains raw cream, which is ideal for those who wish to include good sources of dairy into their diet like a number of our ‘primal’ subscribers. Tell us more about the inspiration behind that bar!
Salted Caramel is such a popular combination in the traditional chocolate market, mainly because the flavours work so well.  However  there didn’t seem to be any raw chocolate variations which I felt did the flavour justice. Whilst I do have many Vegan customers, many aren’t, and so to be able to offer those customers their favourite flavour but without any refined sugar meant Mylk + Salted Caramel was a success from the start.

If you could possibly pick, do you have a favourite flavour in your range?
That’s a tough question as it can vary so much depending on my mood. However my go-to bars are usually Pure Dark and Mylk+Crispies.

As well as following a clean, vegan diet – what else do you do to maintain a healthy lifestyle?
I’m not much of a cardio queen but I love yoga. My favourite is hot yoga, and that’s how I spend most of my time between making chocolate and running the business side of Raw Halo.

We love featuring your chocolate in our boxes! If our subscribers want to stock up on your bars, where can they get their hands on some?
We sell our full range of raw chocolate bars and superfood packs online at rawhalo.com but we’re also stocked at a growing number of health food stores, juice bars, cafes and fitness centres around the UK. Some of our favourite stockists are Frame, and Raw Press in London and The Yard in Alderley Edge. We’re just in the process of adding some exciting new stockists which we’ll be announcing later this month.

What does a typical day look like at Raw Halo HQ?
It varies so much at the moment. The past few months have been very focused on business set-up and preparing for events and trade shows. On the days when I’m making chocolate, it’s long days and long nights in the kitchen preparing my batches, tempering, moulding and handwrapping my bars. Days where I’m not producing are a little less hectic – that’s where I tend to have a bit more time for yoga in the morning, dealing with my suppliers, meeting new stockists, managing my online orders, and working on marketing.

What are your plans for Raw Halo in 2015?
I’ll be focusing on my online channel whilst building upon my growing list of stockists. I have my favourite shops here in London and also back home in the Peak District and I’ll be working on getting Raw Halo stocked in all of them. I’ve also got an exciting line-up of events coming up over the next few months, including Fare Healthy, Speciality and Fine Food Fair, and London Om Yoga Show. Most exciting for me, I hope to expand my range to include more flavours – the hard part will be deciding which ones!

Welcome to our favourite blog feature: ‘Supplier Spotlight’ where we’ll be interviewing the creative and hardworking individuals that create the delicious snacks that find their way into our boxes. In July’s boxes we are thrilled to be featuring the delightful ‘Spirulina Bites’ by Somerset-based company Little Sprout Gourmet Superfoods.

Little Sprout produce delicious handmade raw snacks made with their signature key superfood ingredient: Spirulina. We caught up with the lovely Loulou, founder of Little Sprout, to find out more about her new and exciting range of healthy snacks.

Tell us more about Little Sprout Gourmet Superfoods!

Little Sprout is a new kid on the block, set up last year by us – Loulou and Terri, two sisters egging each other on. We’re from a big family and have always loved cooking and the alchemy that comes about when we’re in the kitchen together. We also share a love affair with ingredients, spending hours in our local organic markets, drooling over the fresh vegetables and fruit, or foraging in the hedgerows for edible delights.

Why Spirulina?

Spirulina is the key ingredient in all our recipes. When we first came across a spirulina farm in the south of France, something just clicked and we got really excited. We’d been used to seeing the pills and powders on the shelves of health food shops but here before us was a farm and in the sunshine the spirulina was being harvested from freshwater tanks. Aahhh – it’s alive! and it’s a food! We were hooked, captivated by the process of gathering the algae, straining it and pressing it into long spaghetti strands that would dry to a brittle thread and shatter into vermicelli of deepest green. And to top it all it tasted amazing! We started mixing up recipes to sprinkle over salads and experimenting with this wonderful new-found ingredient. At the same time we were delving into the world of raw cuisine and that had a big influence.

What exactly is Spirulina?

It’s the ultimate superfood – sunshine captured and transformed into a powerhouse of vitamins, minerals and amino acids!  Spirulina is a microscopic blue-green algae that occurs naturally in freshwater lakes around the world and is widely cultivated for its astounding nutritional properties. It’s an ancient food that’s been around since before the evolution of plants – that’s amazing to me – and just about the most nutrient dense food growing on this planet. With over 50% protein, 20 x more beta carotene than carrots and an impressive array micro-nutrients – it’s a mega health booster. And if you saw the recent Channel 4 documentary you’ll know that Nasa takes spirulina very seriously – it’s the food of the astronauts!

What can you do with sun-dried Spirulina?

Lots of people ask me what to do with spirulina. They know it’s brilliant but wonder how best to incorporate it into their diet and how much to use. The easiest thing to do with pure sun-dried spirulina is to sprinkle it on your food – it’s great with so many dishes, sweet or savoury and it has a lovely crunchy texture. It’ll blend up in a smoothie and give it a fabulous colour too. How much to use? Well, that’s really up to you – start with a teaspoonful each day and see how you get on. It’s a completely natural whole food with no known adverse effects and the nutrients are especially easy to digest and absorb. And the other great thing about spirulina is how versatile it is and how well it fits with other foods to make tasty treats.

Three countries?

We straddle the distance between France and England – Terri over there, cultivating lavender, keeping bees and in the process of building a solar dehydrator (this time for local fruits and herbs), and me here, cooking up a storm in my kitchen. Somehow we still manage to work together, albeit intermittently or at a distance but we fire each other up with new ideas and couldn’t manage without the mutual support.
 

To add to the mix there’s a third country, because we now source our spirulina from two wonderful social enterprise farms in southern India where the long growing season under the hot sun produces an abundance of green goodness.

What other products are there in the Little Sprout range?

As well as the Pure Sun-dried Spirulina we make a Spirulina Sprinkle with Yeast Flakes & Sesame which adds a rich and yummy flavour, sprinkled over salads, soups and any savoury dish. Then we have Spirulina Crunch – a power-packed savoury snack in three flavours: Beetroot & Basil; Carrot & Cumin; and Toasted Seeds with Tamari, Ginger & Chilli. In the sweets department (but with no added sugars) we’ve got Spirulina Bites – crunchy raw cookies with coconut, banana, sesame and goji berries. In July’s Savannah box, we are delighted to be featuring the fantastic ‘Original Biltong’ by Buckinghamshire-based company Caveman Kitchen.

Caveman Kitchen produce delicious biltong made from the highest quality grass-fed British and Irish beef. The beef is seasoned with natural herbs and spices (with no added nasties) and is slow cured, resulting in a tasty, low-carb and protein-rich snack ideal for the health conscious snacker.

Tell us more about Caveman Kitchen and your range of biltong.
Caveman Kitchen’s ethos is clean and simple – we believe in eating clean and playing hard. Created as work of love by myself and my wife Renata, with us both being ‘full-life’ enthusiasts ourselves, we wanted to make use of the wide-ranging research available to follow what we believe to be the most beneficial diet and for us that is the Paleo way of eating. Doing this has had an amazing effect on our family life, helping us to work hard and play hard, all with a satisfied stomach.

All of our Biltong products are super high in protein and because the meat is slow cured and not cooked, the natural enzymes stay intact, allowing your body to easily digest the high quality protein. What’s more, it’s extremely low in carbohydrates and contains only 4 to 6 grams of fat per 100 grams. Ultimately, Caveman Kitchen is not about skimping, it’s about enhancing our daily food experience without extra hassle; we offer a weekly or monthly subscription service to make it super convenient for people to enjoy. We want our Caveman Kitchen Biltong to be a go-to snack food for everyone.

How did it get started and what was the inspiration for launching the brand?
Caveman Kitchen is pretty much a work of love. Ever since Renata and I met we have always shared a great enthusiasm for good exercise and lifestyle practices that make us feel like we’re working at optimum capacity. With Renata hailing from Sao Paulo she’s always been interested in a fun balance of healthy eating and exercise – and preferably sun! I guess you could say I’m an outdoors type with a big love of playing and teaching sport and going on major research missions to learn more about food, lifestyle, bio-hacking.

A couple of Christmases ago, Renata bought me my very own Biltong box, I started experimenting with curing the meats and posting It on Facebook; first, all our friends started making enquiries and soon after we started to receive requests from people all over! That’s when things got exciting and we decided to turn our hobby into a collaborative business adventure. Since then, the demand just seemed to keep on growing.

Who are Caveman Kitchen products designed for?
These products can be enjoyed by absolutely anyone – but in particular they’re great for Paleo aficionados, exercise-conscious people- sportsmen and women, foodies and purveyors of high quality –easy to access clean, grass-fed meat that gives bang for its buck that is sugar-free and (chemical) preservative free in the curing process.

What has the response been like since your launch and have their been any unexpected surprises?
It really has been a journey, and of course by no means easy. Working together can be tough with two strong minds but we find a way through and find that our joint experience really lends itself to the project. Highlights include getting our biltong produced to our exacting standards (that’s seen us certified by the Paleo Foundation in the USA) to dealing with the manufacturing & shipping of our Spiraliser to the UK and the USA (where we mostly sell this product via the Amazon platform).

We’ve had to be creative and resilient in equal measure to not give up when met with a variety of challenges. But the buzz we get when a new customer like a CrossFit Box signs up to sell our biltong or like at the moment where we’re settling a wholesale agreement to see our Spiraliser distributed in Ireland, it really makes all the hard work worthwhile.

What sets Caveman Kitchen apart from other biltong products on the market?
Well, it’s the real deal and has been certified by the Paleo Foundation in the US. We also wanted to make it easy for our customers so we set up easy, fuss-free rolling pay options of either weekly or monthly subscriptions with no contract so you can stop it at any time, the best thing about it is its delivered straight to your door to avoid that ‘ah, we’ve got no food in!’ panic we all know too well –especially tricky when the mainstream supermarkets simply are lacking when it comes to paleo-friendly food.

We’re really driven now that we’ve got a growing tribe of our own – an 18-month old and the next on the way. We want them to be chowing on real food i.e. something that is readily identifiable and that is clean and good for them. It’s so sad to see the burgeoning obesity epidemic in the Western World – all through misinformation and frankly, laziness. If we can get our little boy eating dried meat (along with eating avocados and other such healthy “fats” and veggies) then we feel obliged to try and educate others to do the same. What greater legacy could we want??!

You’ve also created your own vegetable spiraliser – can you tell us more about your inspiration to launch that?
We recognise that food tastes as good as it looks and are always on the lookout for alternative ways of presenting and preparing foods. It’s about making healthy food quickly and easily and with all the creative flair of a Michelin star kitchen. As Paleo eaters we avoid pasta but let’s face it, what quicker meal (especially on a week night) can you knock up? So we came across the idea of vegetable noodles and cutters that produce them from courgettes, sweet potatoes and other such firm veggies. Most cutters out there don’t give our food the treatment it deserves. Vegetables usually don’t fit in properly or can’t be cut at all, the devices are awkward & painful to use and make a colossal mess. We like our fresh vegetables cut with just as much precision as possible so we created the Caveman Kitchen Spiral Vegetable Cutter. Like most cavemen, we love a good tool and this invention has made our cooking life so much better!

What’s your favourite way to use your spiraliser and do you have any signature dishes?
It’s perfect for use in salads, stir-fry’s, decoration, and Pasta Dishes. We’re loving the biltong beef stir-fry at the moment but we have fun coming up with new dishes every day- treating our food like a ‘can’t cook, won’t cook’ challenge! We shop seasonally and make a lot of use of good quality fresh vegetables so each day is different. When the weather’s hot (which it is at the time of writing) a quick and easy stir-fry of prawns, chilli, garlic and courgette noodles is freakin’ awesome!

What does a typical day look like at Caveman Kitchen HQ?
A-ha! Well with a little one under two and between us, two very active lifestyles we tend to pack a lot into a day. We both rise early, I’ll tend to start the day with CrossFit whilst Renata enjoys running. If possible, we’ll both try and get some forward planning in before our little boy wakes up. Food-wise we like to exercise the “Thirty within thirty” rule i.e. 30g of protein within 30 minutes of waking up. For me this’ll be a bullet-proof coffee or bacon, eggs and avo or sauerkraut and for Renata a protein-rich smoothie. On days when there’s more time it’ll be a family affair – eggs, bacon, avocado or paleo pancakes and berries or scrambled eggs on flax seed bread with smoked salmon. From there we’re set up for the day and assign each other roles depending on the time we have, we make sure our clients’ orders are on track, new subscribers are on board and that our social media platforms are all primed ready with interesting stuff for our followers.

What are your plans for Caveman Kitchen in 2015?
Caveman Kitchen 2015 is all about growing our subscribers and stockists, making sure they are super happy with what they’re getting, keeping up with research and simply staying on the quest of whole-health food.

Here we’ll be interviewing the creative and hardworking individuals that create the delicious snacks that find their way into our boxes. In this month’s box, we are delighted to be featuring the unique and tasty ‘Saber-Toothed Tiger’ bar by Berlin-based company Die Kraft des Urstromtals.

Die Kraft des Urstromtals, translated as ‘The Force of the Glacial Valley’ produce delicious handmade energy bars, made from dried fruits, nuts and seeds and jerky. They use only the highest quality ingredients and tentatively make each and every bar by hand, as our ancestors may have done. Creators of fuel for the modern hunter gatherer, we caught up with founders Ivan and Janine to find out more about their exciting range of delicious energy bars.

Tell us more about Die Kraft des Urstromtals and your range of products

At Die Kraft des Urstromtals we are committed to producing healthy and tasty food at the highest quality. For us, that means food without useless ingredients such as synthetic stabilizers, binding or separating agents and all that stuff that the industry puts into mass products in order to make them cheaper and more durable. Instead, we use natural products only: nuts, berries and spices and by combining them with taste and intuition, we create sweet and savoury energy bars. We make them on our own and pack them by hand. Every single bar is like a small gift …

Currently we offer three different tastes. Soon we will be launching more bars: with protein, for endurance athletics, for other purposes. But always on a natural basis and always hand made. And always in compostable packagings. It is important for us to not only look after our products but also the waste that we produce. We don’t want to fill the oceans with plastics. So we use compostable packagings. That is a huge step forward compared to “degradable“ packaging. Plastics are also degradable. In 400 years…

How did it get started and what was the inspiration for launching the brand?

In fact, it started with a need: we do lots of sports. From hiking through the woods to swimming, fighting and riding. Or better: we did 😉 Since we started this project, we had to reduce our activities in order to get Die Kraft up and running…. Anyway, we also tried the paleo diet and then we found there is not much to take with you when you’re active. Something tasty, small and durable. Not an avocado. I love them very much! But they are too delicate to take them with you when hiking. So we made our bars. Then people around us loved them. We always shared with our friends. One day we said: why not starting the whole thing commercially?

Who are Die Kraft des Urstromtals products designed for? (Who do they appeal to?)

Well, well, well…. haha! It is easy and it is so complex. Of course, our products are made for active, sporty people. When we started we were in our Cross Fit phase, therefore we designed them for this community. But frankly, our products fit for all who want tasty and nutrient food to take with you: whether you are a fire fighter or a student. Wether you use your brain or your body: you will need good food. That is what we offer.

What has the response been like since your launch and have their been any unexpected surprises?

Especially the Saber Toothed Tiger is our “most responsive“ product: you love it or you hate it. Our tagline, that we use in fairs on a backdrop, is “Sink or swim!“. That displays how people react on our bars. Most of them get really enthusiastic about the flavours and the variety of ingredients. But some, the conservative germans in particular, find the products too far away from what they know… That’s okay with us. We don’t do this to please the whole world.

Surprisingly, several people we did not know before came to us, attracted by our work, and offered us to join Die Kraft, to deliver work that we needed. That was an amazing experience. We had not ask for that. They came on their own purpose. And some even didn’t want money!

Today, for example, we have one person in charge of sales, one other responsible for SEO, one other helps us with the calculations and business forecast…. and we do pay them. 😉

What sets Die Kraft des Urstromtals apart from other snacks on the market?

Ours taste better 😉 Try them.

We make bars from several ingredients including spices and that brings diversity into the taste. We do not chop all the ingredients into a brown paste so you can’t recognize what’s inside. Instead, we leave all things as large as possible. With every bite you will have another flavour. We love diversity. And we love pleasure. Eating should always be a pleasure.

What was the first item that you launched and how has your range developed since then?

We started with three different bars right away: the savoury, the fiery and the fruity bar. The fiery became “the stimulating“ after we discovered that most customers were deterred by the word fiery. Apart from that and some slighter design adjustments nothing has changed with these bars.

We are currently working on new products that will extend our range. Watch out! It will take another few more weeks, but we’ll come up with cool stuff.

If you could possibly pick, do you have a favourite product from your range?

Ivan: It’s always the one I am working on!

Janine: I love the fiery one… ups! Of course, it’s the stimulating bar …

What does a typical day look like at Die Kraft des Urstromtals HQ?

Our days start with a herb tea. Whilst having the first cup we plan the next hours. Then the orders from the last day are prepared to be picked up around 2 pm. Emails must be read and answered… After that it becomes chaotic… 😉 Everything may happen! We are constantly developing ideas and tastes. At the same time we do networking and sales, raw product and resource scouting.

 What are your plans for Die Kraft des Urstromtals in 2015?

We want to spread over the german market and reach out for the rest of Europe… of course, we will not extend over the whole continent, but we have to start. And we’ll bring new products to life! But the most important thing today is THE MACHINE: We want a little helper for bringing our bars into shape. And we have chosen it already. Soon we will have it.

In this month’s box, we are delighted to be featuring the delicious ‘Italian ProMix by Wyldsson.

Not only do Wyldsson create wholesome trail mixes in handy portable tubes, but they also offer a fantastic range of paleo baking flours, breakfast toppings and incredibly addictive tubs of nut butter, too. Highly regarded amongst sporting professionals, Wyldsson pride themselves on using the finest ingredients, earning a reputation for producing exceptional and innovative health food products. We interviewed founder of Wyldsson, Dave McGeady about his developing interest in sports nutrition and passion for getting creative in the Wyldsson kitchen.

Tell us more about Wyldsson and your range of products.

We make clean, healthy snack and breakfast products that taste great. There are lots of products out there which are healthy. There are lots of products out there that taste great. But there are very, very few that tick both boxes. To pull this off, we’ve sourced some really interested ingredients from all over the world that are pure and unadultered.. including Organic Persian Mulberries,  Organic Goldenberries, Californian Pomegranate and even dried Italian Tomato.

How did it get started and what was the inspiration for launching the brand?

I started paying more attention to my own health when I had a skin cancer scare back in 2012. It really made me think a lot more about health and nutrition. For the first time I started looking at the back of the packets of whatever I was buying in the supermarket. And it scared me. I was so surprised by how much junk is in so many products. That was when I decided that I wanted to start a company that makes food products that taste great, but don’t have all the junk in them.

Who are Wyldsson products designed for?

Our products are designed for the type of people who actually read through the list of ingredients. That’s why we put ours on the front of all our products. One group of people in this category is professional athletes. They are incredibly careful about what they eat and so eat clean. They are some of our biggest customers.

What has the response been like since your launch and have their been any unexpected surprises?

Amazing. Our sales have been growing fast every month. And we’ve done pretty much zero promotion or advertising. It’s all been through word of mouth. It really shows how enthusiastic people are about better quality foods.

Last year, our customers include some of the best athletes on the planet. Our products were chosen by 6 Nations rugby teams, NBA basketball players, some of the leading golfers in the world, Premier League football players and Tour de France cyclists.

What sets Wyldsson products apart from other health food brands?

We use a calibre of ingredient that is just far higher than what you’d find in products in your local supermarket. Things like Californian Pomegranate, Organic Ecuadorian Banana and Organic Persian Mulberries. We don’t use any junk or filler in any of our products. All our products are gluten and dairy free too.

What was the first item that you launched and how has your range developed since then?

We started off with our ProMix snacktubes. Then added muesli, breakfast topping and nut butters. We had 5 ProMixes at the start, but have now built this up to 8 different varieties. Our goal is to get to 10, and we’re almost there!

If you could possibly pick, do you have a favourite product from your range?

Our Pro7 muesli is incredibly popular. We struggle to keep it in stock.

What does a typical day look like at Wyldsson HQ?

There really is no typical day. My favourite days are when we’re developing recipes for new products, and trying to figure out by trial and error which combinations of flavours work best together. That’s my passion!

What are your plans for Wyldsson in 2015?

More product development. We’re working hard on sourcing some new ingredients and tastes – last week we were at the largest Organic trade fair in the world on the hunt for some really special fruits. All I can say is, stay tuned!
